Yes or no tarot cards

44 say yes, 18 say maybe, 16 say no. Each with the reason, taken from the card’s upright meaning.

Every card in the Rider-Waite-Smith deck leans one way when you ask it a closed question. This page lists the verdict our yes-or-no tarot tool gives for each of the 78 cards, with the sentence that explains it. The verdicts come from each card’s upright meaning, so the Ten of Cups (a happy home) is a yes and the Three of Swords (heartbreak) is a no, while cards that describe waiting or a choice still to be made sit in the maybe column.

The verdict is the headline; the reason is the reading. A no from the Eight of Swords (you feel trapped by a story you tell yourself) asks something different of you than a no from The Devil. Want to draw one instead of reading the list?Ask your question and draw a card.

Yes cards

44 cards

Cards whose upright meaning moves toward the thing you asked about: growth, arrival, agreement, momentum.

Maybe cards

18 cards

Cards that answer “not yet”, “it depends on you” or “you don’t have the full picture”. Read the reason; it usually says what the answer hinges on.

No cards

16 cards

Cards whose upright meaning is loss, conflict, ending or a trap. A no is often about timing or approach, not a permanent verdict.

Common questions

Yes or no
Which tarot cards mean yes?▾

44 of the 78 cards read as a yes in our deck, led by The Sun, The Star, The World and the Aces of Cups, Wands and Pentacles. The full list with the reason for each is above.

Which tarot cards mean no?▾

16 cards read as a no, including The Tower, Death, the Ten of Swords and the Five of Pentacles. Most of them describe loss, conflict or an ending in their upright meaning.

What about reversed cards?▾

This list, like our yes-or-no tool, reads every card upright. Some readers soften a yes to a maybe or flip the verdict when a card lands reversed; if you read reversals, check the reversed meaning on the card’s own page.

Why are some cards a maybe?▾

Cards like The Hanged Man, The Hermit or the Two of Swords describe waiting, uncertainty or a decision that is still yours to make. Calling them yes or no would hide what they actually say.
