Your birthday and a year reduce to one card of the Major Arcana: the theme of that year for you. Below the tool, the card of the year for everyone, 2026 to 2030.
A theme to think with over the year, not a forecast. Read it again on your next birthday.
A year of turning points. Cycles close and new ones open, often through timing you don’t control. Luck feels louder, in both directions. Adaptability is the skill; clinging to how things were is the cost.
Paired card: The Magician, read as the year’s quieter, inner note.
A year of accountability and balance. Decisions, contracts and consequences come due. Fairness, honesty and paperwork matter. What you’ve set in motion returns to you, so it rewards acting in ways you’d defend in the open.
Paired card: The High Priestess, read as the year’s quieter, inner note.
A year card uses the same numerology as the tarot birth card, with one change: the year you want to read takes the place of your birth year. Add your birth month, your birth day, and the full year you want to read. Someone born on 21 March reading 2026 adds 3 + 21 + 2026 = 2050. A total over 22 has its digits added again (2 + 0 + 5 + 0 = 7), so their 2026 year card is The Chariot. For 2027 the same birthday gives 2051, then 8: Strength. A total of exactly 22 is read as The Fool.
The card of the year for everyone leaves the birthday out and uses only the year’s digits: 2 + 0 + 2 + 6 = 10, the Wheel of Fortune for 2026; 2 + 0 + 2 + 7 = 11, Justice for 2027. Each year card also has a partner, found the same way as the second birth card: a result of 10 or more reduces once more to a single digit (10 to 1, The Magician; 11 to 2, The High Priestess), and a single-digit result pairs with the card that reduces to it (2030 comes to 5, The Hierophant, paired with 14, Temperance). Some readers treat the partner as the year’s quieter, inner card. The rule is the one the birth card tool on this site uses, so the two calculators always agree.
As with birth cards, this is arithmetic on the calendar, not astronomy, and the honest use is reflective: a card to come back to through the year and ask where it shows up. Mary K. Greer, who popularised the method, runs the personal year card from birthday to birthday; plenty of readers simply use the calendar year.

Major Arcana
22 / 0 · The FoolA year for beginnings you can’t fully plan: a move, a new field, a relationship that doesn’t fit the old pattern. The work is to say yes before you feel ready, and the risk is leaping without looking at all.
1 · The MagicianSkills and resources you already have finally get used on purpose. A strong year to launch, pitch or learn in public. The trap is spreading focus across too many tricks at once.
2 · The High PriestessLess visible progress, more private understanding. Dreams, instincts and what goes unsaid carry weight. The year rewards patience and reading between the lines, and punishes forcing answers early.
3 · The EmpressThings you tend grow: projects, relationships, a home, a body of work, sometimes a family. Comfort and creativity are the currency. Watch for giving so much that nothing is left for you.
4 · The EmperorOrder, responsibility and long-term foundations: contracts, routines, a role with authority. A year to set rules you can live by. Rigidity and control are the shadow to watch.
5 · The HierophantTeachers, institutions and traditions matter this year, whether you study, take vows or join something bigger. Ask which rules you actually believe in; following ones you don’t is the cost.
6 · The LoversA defining choice, often about a relationship or values, where you can’t keep both options. Alignment is the reward. Avoiding the decision is itself a decision.
7 · The ChariotMovement, ambition and willpower: travel, a push toward a goal, a win you work for. Steering matters more than speed. Forcing through when you should change course is the risk.
8 · StrengthCourage shows up as patience and self-control rather than force. Old fears or habits can be tamed this year. The lesson is gentleness with yourself as much as with others.
9 · The HermitSolitude, study and reflection: a year to ask what you actually want before chasing it. Mentors and inner guidance matter. Withdrawal that turns into isolation is the thing to watch.
10 · Wheel of FortuneCycles close and new ones open, often through timing you don’t control. Luck feels louder, in both directions. Adaptability is the skill; clinging to how things were is the cost.
11 · JusticeDecisions, contracts and consequences come due. Fairness, honesty and paperwork matter. What you’ve set in motion returns to you, so it rewards acting in ways you’d defend in the open.
12 · The Hanged ManPlans stall or get suspended, and the delay is the point: you see the situation from a different angle. Letting go of a fixed outcome helps. Martyrdom and endless waiting are the trap.
13 · DeathSomething runs its course: a job, a habit, an identity, a relationship dynamic. The year is about transformation rather than loss for its own sake. Resisting the ending prolongs it.
14 · TemperanceModeration, healing and combining things that seemed separate: work and life, two people, two skills. Progress is steady rather than dramatic. Impatience and excess throw it off.
15 · The DevilHabits, dependencies and power dynamics come into focus: what has a hold on you, and what you hold on to. Honest desire is fine; the work is seeing where you’re less free than you think.
16 · The TowerStructures that were already unstable give way, sometimes abruptly. The upheaval clears ground for something more honest. Rebuilding on the same weak foundations is the mistake to avoid.
17 · The StarRecovery after a hard stretch: healing, faith in the future, creative openness. A good year to set long-range intentions and be seen. Waiting for inspiration instead of acting on it is the risk.
18 · The MoonThings are not what they seem, and clarity comes slowly. Dreams, fears and imagination run high. Trust instinct, check facts, and don’t make permanent decisions from temporary fog.
19 · The SunEnergy, success and warmth: a year when things work and you’re seen doing them. Celebrate, share, be generous. Overconfidence and burning out on the good times are the shadows.
20 · JudgementA wake-up call: reviewing the past, forgiving it, and answering a call you’ve been putting off. Big decisions feel inevitable. Judging yourself too harshly stalls the renewal.
21 · The WorldA long chapter reaches its end: graduation, a finished project, arriving somewhere you’ve worked toward. Integrate what you’ve learned before starting the next cycle. Leaving loose ends is the risk.
Common questions
Year cards
What is the tarot card of the year for 2026?▾
2026 adds up to 10 (2 + 0 + 2 + 6 = 10): the Wheel of Fortune, a year of turning points and cycles changing. It reduces again to 1, The Magician.
What is the tarot card of the year for 2027?▾
2027 adds up to 11 (2 + 0 + 2 + 7 = 11): Justice, a year of accountability, balance and consequences. It reduces again to 2, The High Priestess.
How is a personal year card calculated?▾
Add your birth month, your birth day, and the full year you want to read. For a 21 March birthday in 2026: 3 + 21 + 2026 = 2050, then 2 + 0 + 5 + 0 = 7, The Chariot. Any total over 22 has its digits added again; 22 is The Fool. It is the same arithmetic as the tarot birth card, with this year in place of your birth year.
When does a year card start?▾
Two conventions are in use. Many readers, following Mary K. Greer, run the personal year card from one birthday to the next; others use the calendar year. The card of the year for everyone (from the year’s digits alone) runs January to December.
Can a year card be a Minor Arcana card?▾
Not with this method. Every total is reduced to 22 or below, so year cards are always Major Arcana. Some readers then add a Minor Arcana card with the same number for detail, but that is an extension, not part of the calculation.
