How a birthday gets its cards
DecansThe Sun moves about one degree a day, so a calendar date pins it to within a degree. The zodiac’s 360 degrees divide into twelve signs of 30, and each sign into three decans of 10. A birthday therefore belongs to one sign and to one of 36 decans.
In the late nineteenth century the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn gave each piece of that wheel a card. Every sign has a Major Arcana card: Aries is The Emperor, Pisces The Moon. Every decan has one of the numbered cards from Two to Ten, in the suit of the sign’s element: Wands for fire, Cups for water, Swords for air, Pentacles for earth. And every decan has a ruling planet with a Major Arcana card of its own: Mars is The Tower, Venus The Empress.
So a birthday gets three cards. The decan card is the most specific to the date. The sign card is shared with everyone of that sign. The ruler card is the accent that slice of the sign adds. The Rider–Waite–Smith deck follows the same scheme.
The dates in the table are where the Sun is at noon UTC in most years between 1980 and 2030. On the first or last day of a range the Sun can be on either side, depending on the birth year and hour; the calculator says so when it applies. This is not the tarot birth card, which comes from adding up the digits of the full birth date.

Common questions
Birthday tarotWhat is my birthday tarot card?
It is the numbered card of the decan your birthday falls in: the ten-degree slice of the zodiac the Sun is crossing on that date. A 25 March birthday is in the first decan of Aries, so its card is the Two of Wands. Two Major Arcana cards go with it: the card of the sign (The Emperor for Aries) and the card of the planet ruling the decan (The Tower for Mars).
Is a birthday tarot card the same as a tarot birth card?
No. The birthday cards here come from where the Sun is on your date, so everyone born within the same ten days or so shares them. The tarot birth card is numerology: month, day and full birth year added and reduced to the Major Arcana, so it changes with the year you were born. The calculator shows both when you add your birth year.
Why does my date show two possible sets of cards?
The Sun does not change decan at midnight, or on the same day every year. On the first or last day of a decan the answer depends on your birth year and the hour you were born. The calculator shows the usual cards first and the alternative below them; a birth chart settles it.
Do birthday tarot cards predict anything?
No. They are a traditional set of correspondences between the calendar and the deck, useful as a prompt for reflection in the same way a sun sign is. Nothing here is a forecast or advice.
