How the numbers are worked out

Pythagorean method

Each letter has a value from 1 to 9: A, J and S are 1; B, K and T are 2; and so on to I and R, which are 9. Accents are ignored, so José counts as JOSE. Your Expression number adds every letter of your full birth name, your Soul Urge the vowels (A, E, I, O, U; Y too, in a name with no other vowel) and your Personality the consonants. Each name is reduced on its own first, then the totals are added and reduced again.

Your Life Path comes from your birth date: the month, the day and the year are each reduced to a single digit, then added and reduced once more. Born 5 October 1990: 10 becomes 1, 5 stays 5, 1990 becomes 1 + 9 + 9 + 0 = 19 and then 1; 1 + 5 + 1 = 7. If any sum lands on 11, 22 or 33, it stays: those are the master numbers.

Your Birthday number is the day of the month reduced, and your Personal Year adds your birth month and day to the current year, reduced to 1–9. It changes every January.

Numerology is a tradition for reflection, not a science and not a forecast. Read the numbers as a set of questions about yourself, useful exactly as far as they ring true.

Common questions

Numerology
What is my Life Path number?▾

It is the number your full birth date reduces to: month, day and year are each reduced to one digit, then added and reduced again, keeping 11, 22 and 33. It is the number numerologists read first, as the main theme of a life.

Which name should I use?▾

Your full name as it was given at birth, every given name and surname. A married name or a nickname gives different numbers; some people compare both, reading the birth name as the foundation and the current name as how they show up today.

What are master numbers?▾

When a sum lands on 11, 22 or 33 it is not reduced further. These master numbers are read as intensified versions of 2, 4 and 6, with more potential and more pressure. Many people never have one among their core numbers.

Is numerology accurate?▾

There is no scientific evidence that numbers derived from a name or a date describe a person. Read it the way you would read a horoscope or a tarot card: a prompt for reflection, not a fact or a prediction.
